Strengthening Staff Retention and Saving £240k

When Scott Cordon became Principal of King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool in 2023, he took on a school in a particularly challenging context. Like many schools, staff retention and the rising cost of supply cover were key concerns.

Since 2022, King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool, part of the Great Schools Trust, has been using Edurio staff surveys to better understand staff experience and take meaningful action.

Turning staff voice into real change

Through regular Edurio surveys, Scott and his team gained clear, actionable insights into staff wellbeing, workload, and engagement. This allowed them to address issues early and build a culture where staff feel heard and supported.

“Edurio has helped us really understand how our staff feel and what they need. That insight has been invaluable in shaping the way we lead the school.”

£240k saved through improved retention

As staff satisfaction improved, so did retention. Fewer staff leaving meant significantly reduced reliance on supply teachers.

“By listening to our staff through Edurio and acting on their feedback, we’ve been able to retain more of our team. This has helped to lead to a saving of around £240,000 in supply costs in just one year.”

Importantly, Edurio surveys have supported this outcome by enabling better decision-making, helping leaders create the conditions where staff choose to stay.

Beyond cost savings: A more stable school environment

The benefits have gone well beyond financial savings.

With a more stable and committed staff team, the school has seen:

  • More consistent behaviour across the school
  • Stronger relationships between staff and students
  • Reduced staff absence, with fewer sickness call-ins

“When staff are happy and feel valued, it shows in every part of the school, from behaviour to attendance.”

A school staff are proud to work in

Scott is open about his ambition to make King’s a school where people love to work, and he’s proud of the progress made.

“We’re proud to say our staff enjoy working here. That’s something we actively measure and work on, and Edurio plays a key role in that.”
