Introduction
This report examines behaviour and safety in English schools, exploring perceptions of staff support, current school behaviour management strategies, and staff and pupil wellbeing.
We have written this report to amplify key stakeholder voices – staff, pupils and parents – to show where they perceive challenges concerning behaviour and safety, as well as its effect on teaching and learning.
With recent staffing strikes in parts of England and multiple other studies highlighting the growing concerns around behaviour and student absence, there is a strong need for a comprehensive report that looks at feedback from all sides.
Methodology
This report is based on insights from multiple datasets to provide a 360-degree view of behaviour. We use the following surveys in our analysis:
- Edurio Pupil Learning Experience and Wellbeing Survey comprised of over 77,000 pupil responses from 2022/23 and over 184,000 from 2020/21 until 2022/23;
- Edurio Staff Experience and Wellbeing Survey comprised of over 49,000 staff responses from 2022/23 and over 144,000 staff responses from 2018/19 until 2022/23;
- Edurio Parental Engagement Survey comprised of over 38,000 parent responses in 2022/23 and over 86,000 parent responses from 2018/2019 until 2022/23.
