Pupil behaviour is a topic of growing importance, as student absence and incidents of poor behaviour frequently headline the news.

Our new research on pupil behaviour and safety presents a comprehensive analysis of the views of staff, pupils, parents, and school leaders. Alarmingly, we found that feelings of safety have declined by almost 10% in the last two years alone. Exploring feedback from a large and diverse pool of stakeholders, this report is packed with many more eye-opening insights on behaviour management, classroom disruption, safety, and bullying.

Key learnings discussed in the report include:

  • Behaviour Management: Staff report finding it difficult to get support with behaviour issues;
  • Classroom Disruption: Around 40% of both staff and pupils report regular disruptions to lessons;
  • Safety and Bullying: Pupil behaviour is a major factor for staff considering to resign;
  • Changes in Behaviour Over Time: Feelings of safety have declined over the past three years.

Introduction

This report examines behaviour and safety in English schools, exploring perceptions of staff support, current school behaviour management strategies, and staff and pupil wellbeing.

We have written this report to amplify key stakeholder voices – staff, pupils and parents – to show where they perceive challenges concerning behaviour and safety, as well as its effect on teaching and learning.

With recent staffing strikes in parts of England and multiple other studies highlighting the growing concerns around behaviour and student absence, there is a strong need for a comprehensive report that looks at feedback from all sides.

Methodology

This report is based on insights from multiple datasets to provide a 360-degree view of behaviour. We use the following surveys in our analysis:

Who will find this report useful?

This report provides a building block for trust and school leaders, as well as teachers wanting to deepen their understanding of national patterns in behaviour to strengthen their school's behaviour management strategies. It helps to lay out how staff, pupils, and parents currently feel about some crucial aspects of school life and how they are affected by poor behaviour or behaviour management.

Pupil behaviour at schools: A multi-year analysis

In this report, our focus on behaviour in English schools stems from consistent findings in our national benchmark analysis, highlighting that there have been significant changes over the last few years concerning the experience of behaviour by multiple stakeholder groups within schools. Furthermore, the data shows a steady increase in behaviour-related incidents since the return to in-person learning, which results in an increased workload and worsening mental health for staff.
