What Schools See, What Pupils Feel

New national research reveals the gap between what schools observe and what pupils actually experience.

Pupil experience data shows where pupils struggle as they move through secondary school. But it rarely shows why, when viewed in isolation.

This joint report from Edurio and STEER Education changes that. It brings together Edurio’s national pupil survey data, drawn from 231,259 pupils across 608 schools and 75 trusts, with STEER’s self-regulation research spanning nearly a decade. The result is a practical framework that helps school and trust leaders move from what pupils report to what lies beneath those experiences to where action is needed.

Access the newest data on:

  • The KS3 learning culture dip: Why confidence, persistence and interest fall at transition, and why Years 8 and 9 are where the real challenge embeds.
  • Pupil overload as a system issue: Why half of secondary pupils feel overworked, and why no single teacher or subject is responsible or able to fix it alone.
  • Trust and pastoral effectiveness: Why the existence of support systems does not guarantee pupils will use them, and what needs to change.

Why this matters for the year ahead

As the academic year draws to a close, this report gives trust and school leaders the evidence needed to reflect on what pupils have experienced and to plan more precisely for September.

With the findings, you can:

  • Reflect on where confidence and engagement have weakened this year, and plan a stronger start to KS3 in the autumn.
  • Go into the summer with a clearer picture of total pupil load, so September’s systems are built around what pupils can actually sustain.
  • Know which pupils head into the holidays without a trusted adult, and what that means for your pastoral priorities in the new year.
  • Use national benchmarks to ground your end-of-year review and set a sharper improvement agenda for 2025/26.
  • Share compelling, accessible findings with governors and trustees before the summer, so strategic decisions are ready for September.
