Self-evaluation can take more than it gives back
Trusts are answerable to several different audiences: Ofsted, the DfE, Regions Group, the Board. The same evidence often gets reformatted and re-explained for each one. Most SEFs are still written in Word or Excel, saved to a shared drive and updated once a year in a rush, with figures typed in by hand from other systems. Self-evaluation ends up being repeated work rather than something the trust can actually use.
Across a trust there is no simple way to see where each school stands, compare judgements or check what has changed since last time. With Ofsted’s move to report cards, many trusts are reconsidering how they do self-evaluation altogether. It is a good moment to change the tool as well as the template.

A section on attendance shows the figure, the trend and the national comparison without anyone having to look it up. Text can be dictated as well as typed, and last year’s evaluation is already there to update. Headteachers spend their time on the judgement itself.
Meaningful analysis across the trust
Every school’s evaluation is in one place. The trust sees judgements by school and by section, agrees or queries them, marks where support is needed and tracks change from one year to the next. One screen replaces a folder of documents.
Coming in the future: An action library for the sector
We are building the first cross-sector library of school improvement actions, drawn from the anonymised evaluations trusts have completed in Evaluate. Trusts using the tool are shaping the future of self-assessment by contributing to a sector benchmark of actions and a smart recommendation engine we will be releasing later in the year.
Shaped with the trusts that use it
Edurio Evaluate has been developed over the past year with a group of pilot trusts who have shared their approach and reviewed the designed prototypes. It comes from Edurio, which has worked with school trusts for twelve years and runs stakeholder surveys for over 300 trusts and 3,000 schools in England.
As a Trust, we were looking for a practical, connected self-evaluation tool that could give school leaders a clear, consistent view of performance while linking directly to school improvement and risk management. Working with Edurio has enabled us to help shape a platform that brings these elements together in one place, reducing duplication and workload while supporting stronger strategic conversations and more informed decision-making.
It is enabling us to identify more precisely where support is needed across our schools and tailor our Trust-wide support offer in a more strategic way, helping to drive continuous school improvement at pace. Throughout the pilot, Edurio has worked in genuine partnership with us and our schools, listening to feedback and responding quickly to refine and develop the platform, helping to ensure it meets the evolving needs of the sector.
