What more than 110,000 school staff across England told us about why they stay, why they leave and whether they feel heard.

The Staff Experience Report 2026 is available to download now, drawing on the views of more than 110,000 teachers, teaching assistants, school leaders, administrative staff and central trust teams during the 2025/26 academic year.

For the first time, the survey asked staff what makes them want to stay, as well as what might make them leave, so you can see what to protect as well as what to fix.

Key findings

  • Support from colleagues is the biggest reason staff stay, named by 68% of the more than 18,000 who answered, ahead of pay, leadership and career progression.
  • Resignation risk has held at 41% for a second year, and no role moved in the wrong direction.
  • More staff feel overworked (47%, up two points) and stressed (46%, up one point) than a year ago, even as overall wellbeing and belonging improve.
  • 86% of senior leaders say their feedback to leadership has an impact, compared with 29% of teachers.
  • 73% of staff feel fully or largely part of a team with their colleagues.
